Main routes to Salto del Nervión and its overlooks
There are several routes for visiting the Salto del Nervión, each with different characteristics in terms of distance, difficulty, and type of trail. Some options are easier and more accessible, while others require more effort. Choosing the right route is key to enjoying the visit. In fact, when a group requests a guided tour or excursion from us, we always assess their profile to select the route that best suits their characteristics and needs.
Route from Monte Santiago (the easiest one)
The route starting from the area around Monte Santiago is the easiest and most popular option for visiting the Salto del Nervión. It is an easy, well-marked trail suitable for most people. From the parking lot, you can reach the main viewpoint directly via a short, easy walk of about 2 kilometers. This is an ideal option for those looking for a quick and hassle-free visit. An accessible and highly recommended route, especially if you are traveling with very young children or older adults. From Monte Santiago, you can also take a circular route that allows you to enjoy three stunning viewpoints (Esquina de Rubén, Arrieta, and the main viewpoint); we recommend reading the section on the viewpoints. If this 7-kilometer circular route appeals to you, take the PU-BR 41 trail from the last parking lot at Monte Santiago.
Route from Delika (starting from the bottom)
The route from Delika is a more challenging but very scenic option. It’s a roughly 5-kilometer hike (2 hours) that allows you to see the Salto del Nervión from the bottom of the canyon. It offers a completely different perspective. This route is longer and involves a steeper elevation gain, so it requires a higher level of physical fitness. The trail begins in Delika and leads to the waterfall area. Along the way, you’ll enjoy views that are quite different from those at the upper lookouts. It’s an interesting route for those seeking an alternative experience. We recommend reading about the Delika Green Trail on TurismoVasco.
Route from Untzaga (alternative)
This is the least-known route, but also one of the most beautiful. That said, it’s longer (12 kilometers) and more challenging. It’s a very interesting alternative if you want to explore the area from a different perspective. It’s important to remember that this route allows you to see the Salto del Nervión head-on (from the Nerea viewpoint), whereas the conventional route only lets you see the waterfall from the side, from the viewpoint. The route starts in the village of Untza; if you’re interested in this option, we recommend reading the TurismoVasco article on the route to the Salto del Nervión from Untza.

Best route to the Salto del Nervión
The choice of route depends on the type of visit you’d like to take. If you’re looking for something simple and accessible, the best option is the route starting from Mount Santiago. If you prefer a more comprehensive experience, you can choose Untzaga, and if you’d like a different route, Delika. In any case, it’s important to consider the terrain and weather conditions before setting out. As you can see, choosing the right route for your needs is essential.
