Is there water at Salto del Nervión?

When is there water at the Salto del Nervión?

Water is undoubtedly one of the main attractions of the Salto del Nervión. Seeing the waterfall flowing is a spectacular experience that draws thousands of people every year. However, the charm of this setting doesn’t fade when the waterfall is dry. The canyon and the surrounding landscape continue to offer a breathtaking view at any time of year, making a visit highly recommended even when there’s no water. If the waterfall is flowing, it remains active for only a few days following heavy rainfall. That’s why planning your visit carefully is essential. In our case, we regularly organize excursions in the area, which allows us to understand its behavior firsthand and tailor each visit to increase the chances of seeing it at its best.

The Nervión Waterfall doesn’t always have water.

Are you planning to visit Salto del Nervión and wondering if there will be any water? As we’ve mentioned in other sections, the highest waterfall on the Iberian Peninsula doesn’t always have water, so choosing the right time is key. Its appearance can change completely from one day to the next: from a waterfall with a powerful flow to a completely dry wall. During dry periods, the water seeps into the subsoil and flows underground, causing the waterfall to disappear completely. However, when rainfall is abundant, the ground becomes saturated and the water eventually flows to the surface, forming the highest waterfall on the Iberian Peninsula. This behavior is typical of karst areas such as the surroundings of the Monte Santiago Natural Monument. Many people visit the area without taking this factor into account, which can lead to an experience that falls short of expectations.

When is there usually water?

In general, the best times of year to see the waterfall flowing are usually fall, winter, and early spring—especially in the days following heavy rains or periods of snowmelt. That said, there’s no hard-and-fast rule. There may be days when the flow is heavy and others when the waterfall is completely dry, even within the same season.
